My Honest Review
I first bought a Sun Ninja in 2018 after seeing one on the beach. I had tried every beach tent known to man! I liked the way the Sun Ninja canopy stood up without any wind (unlike the Shibumi which hadn’t even been invited yet) and I also liked the way the Sun Ninja could stand against the wind!
For years, we have used a Sun Ninja. We are on our third tent. We own a beach house in Georgetown, SC and spend the majority of our summers there. So we are setting this thing up and using it every single day.
I can personally say, this is a fantastic beach tent and I highly recommend it to everyone who asks me about it on the beach. It take a little bit of trail and error before your master the art of setting it up perfectly, but besides that, it’s a 5 out of 5 in my opinion.
Pros
- Large Coverage Area: 10′ x 10′
- Tall Canopy: Roughly 6′
- Includes 4 poles unlike some other canopy beach tents
- Lightweight, compact, and portable
- UPF 50+ sun protection
- Durable fabric with triple overlock reinforced stitching
- Easy set up and includes a stowaway bag for storage and transport
- Reasonable, affordable price – Good value
Cons
- Not waterproof – it’s barely water resistant – but this is par for the course with these types of beach shades
- Unless you REALLY know how to anchor these tents down, it will struggle in winds above 12 MPH. From my experience, thats when most tents start to drop on he beach though.
Size
I think the size of the Sun Ninja tent shade is great. It’s not too big, but it’s also not too small. The tent measures 10′ x 10′, which is enough space for a family of four or six to enjoy some shade and protection from the sun.
Weight
It’s incredibly lightweight, weighing only 4 pounds, making it easy to transport and set up. I love that I can pack into my beach cart very easily without taking up a ton of room or weighing down my cart.
SPF Rating
The Sun Ninja beach shade has an impressive SPF rating of 50+, which is great for providing protection from the sun’s harmful rays. This allows me to enjoy more time at the beach without having to reapply sunscreen as often while also staying cooler which goes a long way when it heats up to 90+ in South Carolina during the summer.
Fabric
The fabric of the Sun Ninja tent is great. It’s made from a lightweight, breathable material that is designed to keep you cool and comfortable in the sun. I love that it’s durable and can withstand strong winds without tearing or ripping. Plus, it’s machine-washable so I can easily clean it when needed.
Ease of Setup
Setting up the Sun Ninja takes a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes much easier and quicker. I found that after a few tries, I was able to set up the tent in under 5 minutes. With some practice, I’m sure anyone can master this setup process!
Airflow
The open airflow of the Sun Ninja beach tent is great. It is open on all four sides and not only do you benefit from the airflow cooling you off, you have full visibility of the beach and water, unlike some of the quick popup tents that have enclosed sides and backs. I will say though, once the wind picks up above 12mph or so on a windy day and starts whipping up the sand on the beach, I would probably prefer to be enclosed! But, that’s when you know its about time to head back home.
Teardown
Tearing down the Sun Ninja beach tent is incredibly easy and quick. All I have to do is remove the elastic bands from the poles, fold up the fabric, and then collapse the poles. It takes less than 5 minutes to do this.
Portability
The Sun Ninja comes with a carrying bag that makes it easy to transport. The poles are collapsible, so they can be easily placed in the bag as well. I love that I can just throw it into my car or beach cart and take it with me wherever I go!
Storage
When it comes to storing the Sun Ninja beach tent, I highly recommend letting the canopy completely dry before storing it away. This will help ensure that no mold or mildew builds up on the fabric and keeps it in good condition for longer. Additionally, I suggest shaking off all sand from the tent before packing it away and maybe even machine washing and air drying it if you plan on storing it for a long period of time. Doing this will help keep your tent looking like new for years to come!
Summary and Final Opinion
I have tried pretty much all of the different beach tents (Neso, Shibumi, Cool Cabanas and more), but the Sun Ninja is my favorite. It has an impressive SPF rating of 50+ and the fabric is lightweight and breathable, making it comfortable to use in hot weather. Setup is easy once you get the hang of it, and teardown is incredibly quick. The open airflow allows for great visibility while still providing protection from the sun’s rays. Plus, it’s portable and easy to store when not in use. All in all, I highly recommend the Sun Ninja beach tent for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable way to enjoy their time at the beach!

Additional Questions
Is The Sun Ninja worth it?
The Sun Ninja can be a worthy purchase depending on what you’re looking for in a beach tent. The fabric is described as “water-resistant” on the Sun Ninja website, which means it has some level of resistance against light rainfall, but it may not fully protect you in heavy rain or storms. It is, however, excellent for providing shade and UV protection. Therefore, if your primary goal is to have a refuge from the sun during your beach or camping trips, then Sun Ninja would be a worthwhile investment. On the other hand, if you need a cover from potential rain, you might want to look for something more rainproof. There are myriad tent options out there, so be sure to consider your specific needs.
Which tent is best for the beach?
Choosing the “best” beach tent can depend on various factors such as size, UV protection, ease of setup, durability, and price. However, in general, you want a beach tent to be lightweight and easy to carry. It should also provide a good amount of shade coverage and UV protection to keep you safe from the sun. Additional features to consider may include wind resistance, water resistance, and added privacy. The Sun Ninja is one option to consider, especially for its UV protection capability. Information about other beach tents can be easily found online or by asking experts in outdoor gear shops or on online forums.
How do you keep Sun Ninja up in wind?
Keeping your Sun Ninja secure in the wind can be dependent on how you set it up and anchor it into the ground. To ensure optimum stability, first set-up your Sun Ninja correctly following the instructions provided. Usually, this involves inserting the poles into the fabric and securing them in the ground. After the primary set-up, securing the sun canopy with the included stakes, ropes, or sandbags can help it withstand wind. If you’re facing particularly strong winds, you might need additional weights or anchoring tools. Remember, safety should be your top priority. If the wind becomes too strong, consider taking down the sun ninja to prevent possible accidents or damage to the tent.
Where is Sun Ninja manufactured?
The Sun Ninja tent is proudly manufactured in the United States. The brand ensures a variety of sizes and color options, catering to different family sizes and stylistic preferences. On top of this, Sun Ninja offers a one-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee, reinforcing their confidence in the product’s quality.
